Willingdon Island:

Surrounded by the glassy waters of the Vembanad Lake backwaters, Willingdon Island is the largest artificial island in India and a triumph of early 20th-century maritime engineering. Named after the 1st Earl of Willingdon, the erstwhile British Viceroy of India, this massive, roughly 775-acre landmass was meticulously engineered between 1920 and 1936 under the visionary guidance of Sir Robert Bristow.

Top Things to See & Do Inside:

  • Explore Maritime Secrets at the Maritime Museum: Housed within elegantly restored, historic stone bunkers on the naval wing of the island, this specialized museum offers an immersive look into India’s seafaring lineage. Visitors can explore beautifully curated galleries showcasing the history of the ancient Indus Valley maritime routes, the evolution of regional shipbuilding, and the strategic modern operations of the Indian Navy. The outdoor displays feature retired naval missiles, massive multi-blade propellers, and tactical radar installations.

  • Stroll the Quiet, Tree-Lined Colonial Avenues: Unlike the packed, energetic commercial corridors of mainland Ernakulam, Willingdon Island features an exceptionally peaceful, slow-travel environment. Walking or cycling along its wide, perfectly planned avenues takes you beneath a dense canopy of ancient rain trees and past weathered, British-era administrative bungalows. The paths are exceptionally quiet, making it an ideal spot for a relaxing evening stroll away from standard tourist crowds.

  • Photograph Churning Harbor Ships from the Walkways: The northern and western banks of the island run directly parallel to Kochi’s main deep-water shipping lanes. Finding a quiet spot along the waterfront embankments provides a front-row view of the harbor’s daily industrial rhythms. Landscape photographers can capture striking images of massive international cargo vessels, luxury cruise liners, and traditional wooden country boats being guided through the channels by agile tugboats against a beautiful coastal sunset.

  • Sip Tea at Historic Luxury Heritage Hotels: Willingdon Island hosts some of the oldest deluxe hotels in Kochi, including the iconic Trident and Casino Hotel. Built to accommodate elite international travelers and port officials during the mid-20th century, these properties retain a gorgeous, old-world Malabar charm. Spending an afternoon in their open-air courtyards allows you to enjoy a cup of premium orthodox single-estate tea or fresh ginger-infused coffee while soaking in the historic architectural style.
