Punnathur Kotta
Punnathur Kotta:
Located just 3 kilometers north of the world-famous Sree Krishna Temple in Guruvayur, Kerala, Punnathur Kotta (also known as Anakkotta or the Elephant Yard) is the largest sanctuary for captive elephants in the world. Sprawling across 11 acres of lush, shade-draped historic grounds, this unique facility was originally a grand fort and residential palace belonging to the Punnathur Rajas, an ancient local royal lineage.
In 1975, the expansive property was systematically purchased and repurposed by the Guruvayur Devaswom Board to house the growing herd of majestic elephants gifted to the temple by affluent devotees from around the globe. Today, this peaceful, canopy-covered estate safely shelters more than 40 elephants. It functions as a living cultural institution where these highly revered pachyderms are cared for, trained by expert mahouts for major temple processions, and nurtured under the shade of ancient rain trees and soaring coconut palms.
Top Things to See & Do Inside:
Observe the Afternoon Spa and Scrubbing Sessions: Walking along the paved dirt paths between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM allows you to witness the highly intimate relationship between the elephants and their mahouts. Visitors can stand at a safe distance to watch multiple elephants lying down comfortably on their sides while their trainers use natural coconut husks and stone scrapers to rigorously scrub and clean their thick skin in large water troughs, keeping them cool and healthy.
Witness the Making and Feeding of Giant Nutritional Balls: The kitchen complex at the sanctuary is an industrial-scale elephant bakery. Visitors can watch the specialized kitchen staff prepare massive, nutrient-dense balls of cooked ragi (finger millet), horse gram, jaggery, and salt. Watching the mahouts hand-feed these colossal treats directly into the trunks of the resident elephants offers an educational look at captive wildlife nutrition and care.
See Legendary Temple Festival Icons Up Close: Punnathur Kotta is home to some of the most celebrated and culturally iconic elephants in South India, famous for carrying the sacred golden deity (Thidambu) during massive temple pageants like the Thrissur Pooram. Walking through the estate gives you a rare chance to see legendary tuskers—revered by locals for their majestic height, sweeping trunks, and calm demeanor—resting peacefully in their natural element.
Explore the Traditional Punnathur Raja Palace Architecture: At the geometric center of the heavily forested estate sits the original, impeccably preserved 18th-century royal palace mansion (Nalukettu). Built in the classic, multi-tiered Kerala architectural style with a central open-air courtyard and sloping clay-tiled roofs, the structure provides a magnificent historical backdrop. Visitors can admire the weathered timber pillars and stone foundations that once housed the regional rulers.
