Banasura Sagar Dam
Banasura Sagar Dam:
Tucked away in the green hills of Wayanad, Kerala, the Banasura Sagar Dam is a massive engineering marvel with a view to match. It holds the title of the largest earthen dam in India and the second largest in Asia.
Unlike conventional concrete structures, this dam is constructed from massive stacks of rough stones, boulders, and packed earth, stretching across the Karamanathodu River (a tributary of the Kabini River).
What Makes It Special
The true magic of Banasura Sagar happens during the monsoon. As the reservoir fills up, the rising waters partially submerge the surrounding hills, leaving a cluster of tiny, vibrant green islands dotting the expansive blue lake. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the rugged Banasura Hill—the third highest peak in the Western Ghats—it is easily one of the most striking landscapes in northern Kerala.

Key Activities & Experiences
Speed Boating: The ultimate highlight for thrill-seekers. A fast-paced boat ride cuts through the expansive reservoir, navigating around the small islands. (Approx. ₹1,000 for a group of 5).
Coracle Rides: For a traditional, slower-paced experience, you can opt for a ride in a kutta—a circular, woven bamboo boat. (Approx. ₹450 per couple).
The Dam Walkway: The path across the top of the earthen embankment offers panoramic views of the water on one side and the valley below on the other. It is a long, completely open walk, so a morning or late afternoon visit is best to avoid the midday sun.
Shuttle Service: If you prefer to skip the steep uphill walk from the main entrance ticket counter to the top of the dam, small shuttle vans operate continuously for about ₹25 per person (two-way).
Adventure & More: The destination also features a zipline, kayaking options, and a small nature park with traditional tree swings perfect for families.
Tip for Photographers: Aim for the late afternoon window between 3:30 PM and 5:00 PM. The golden hour light bouncing off the water against the mountain ridges creates incredible depth for landscapes.
