Thattekad Bird Sanctuary
Thattekad Bird Sanctuary:
Thattekad Bird Sanctuary (officially known as the Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary) is often described as the richest bird habitat on peninsular India. Spanning just 25 square kilometers in the Ernakulam district of Kerala, this lowland evergreen forest is nestled between branches of the Periyar River.
The name Thattekad literally translates to “flat forest” in Malayalam, a geographic feature that creates a perfectly moist, highly protected sanctuary teeming with insects, worms, and fruiting trees—the ultimate buffet for over 270 species of birds.
Star Avian Attractions
Whether you are a seasoned birder or a casual nature lover, there are a few iconic species that make this sanctuary a must-visit:
Sri Lanka Frogmouth: Famous for its incredible camouflage, this nocturnal bird sits perfectly still on branches, mimicking dry, dead leaves. Spotting one requires an incredibly sharp eye or an experienced local guide.
Malabar Grey Hornbill: An endemic beauty of the Western Ghats, easily recognizable by its large, curved yellow-orange beak and distinct calls echoing through the canopy.
Indian Pitta: A colorful, vibrant winter migrant that spends roughly six months here, foraging on the forest floor.
Cuckoo Paradise: A specific zone within the sanctuary packed with vocal varieties like the Drongo Cuckoo and Hawk Cuckoo.
Key Sanctuary Trails
Instead of driving through, Thattekad is experienced entirely on foot or by water. The Forest Department maintains three primary structured routes:
Salim Ali Trail: The main self-guided trekking trail. It winds through a safe zone of thick jungle and is highly active in the early mornings.
Baza Trail: A specialized, guard-accompanied trail tailored for spotting raptors and forest birds.
Frogmouth Trail: A dedicated 2.5-hour trek accompanied by a forest guard, focused heavily on finding the camouflaged frogmouths and hidden owls in the deep undergrowth.
